A
72-year old woman, Mrs. Olubisi Nihinlola, and her 11-year old
grandson, Waris Ajasa, were burnt to death by a mysterious late night
inferno at Abolade, Omi-Adio in Ido Local Government, Oyo State.
Sympathisers and families of the victims were thrown into mourning on
Friday as their charred remains were retrieved from their burnt
apartment.
The fire, which source was yet to be determined as of 7pm on Sunday, was said to have been noticed around 11pm.
The only survivor, a 13-year-old Latifat Ajasa, was rescued by neighbours.
When our correspondent visited Emiloju Hospital, Teachers’ Quarters,
Omi-Adio, on Sunday, Latifat’sbody were wrapped with bandage.
The nurse, who was on duty, Mr. Olarewaju Opeyemi, said Latifat was
brought to the hospital on Friday night around 12pm with severe burns on
her legs and other parts of her body.
Opeyemi said, “She is responding very well to treatment and her condition, as you can see, is very stable now.”
Latifat’s mother said she was at a vigil when the tragedy struck.
The landlord, Pa Amusa Okegbemi, who was rescued by neighbours after
forcing the door open, said, “I heard a strange sound from the main
sitting room and decided to check the corridor. I discovered that
everywhere was engulfed in smoke. I cried for help before the door was
forced open by neighbours.”
