A petty trader, Mrs, Oluwakemi Akinwunmi told Agege Grade A
Customary Court to dissolve her 16 year-old marriage with her husband,
Mr. Babatunde. Oluwakemi, who dragged her husband before the court over
constant beating, stealing, and lack of care for her and the children,
claimed her husband removed her pregnancy with punches.
The 38 year-old woman, said her husband was fond of beating her at
slightest provocation. She cited a day the husband beat her and she
lost her four months old pregnancy. The mother of two, also informed
the court that her parents warned her against marrying Babatunde, a
danfo driver, but she did not listen. Now, she regrets her action.
Oluwakemi, accused her husband of being an unrepentant smoker and drinker, saying beer drinking always spurred him to beat her.
The applicant also said that the respondent stole some money from her
purse, and when she confronted him about it, he wanted to strangle her.
She urged the court to dissolve the marriage and grant her custody of
the children, because she wouldn’t want the children to go the way of
their father.
Oluwakemi pleaded that the court should compel her husband to pay her
N15,000 monthly allowance while he should also be responsible for the
payment of the children’s school fees. Babatunde did not appear in
court. The court president, Mr Emmanuel shokunle adjourned the case to 5
December.
