Another Lynching In Warri: Man Burnt To Death For Stealing Necklace

Just some few days ago, we heard the story of how four University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) students were brutally murdered in Umuokiri village, Aluu, Rivers State.

The murdered students, Chiadika Lordson, Ugonna Kelechi Obusor, Mike Lloyd Toku, and Tekena Elkanah, all part two students, were murdered in cold blood over alleged theft of a laptop computer and a blackberry phone. It was a horrible sight for all and those who saw the video took their anger to the online community demanding justice for the Aluu4.
The police were quick to arrest the suspects as there was video evidence showing the babaric nature of the youths. Well, the same thing has happened again and this time in the oil city, Warri, Delta state.
The man was allegedly to have stolen a neck chain in one of the popular markets and the people who caught him felt the best way to go about the issue was by burning him to death. The faces of the muderers are shown in the video (but Youtube has pulled it down).
One thing is common in the two events, 1) They were accused of doing something against the law. 2) They were burnt to death.
I know some people would say this is the best way to go about issues like this because of their personal experience with people like this, but then again we are humans and not babaric, besides theres a reason why we have the police and the law. Let us put things in place to stop this from ever happening again.

Aluu Killings: Community Denies Involvement In Death, Demand Release Of Monarch

Seven days after four students of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) were killed by an irate mob in Aluu in Ikwere local government area of Rivers State, the community yesterday broke its silence on the matter.

The community denied that its members were involved in the incident and demanded the immediate release of its detained traditional ruler, Alhaji Hassan Welewa.
The people warned that they would not fold their hands against any further destruction of their community and the infliction of pains on them. They urged security agencies to take note of plans to attack Aluu community by some ethnic groups whose sons were victims of the mob action.
Spokesman of Aluu Garshon Benson, who disclosed this during a media briefing attended by the chairman, Aluu Council of Chiefs, Richard Kalu, called for the release of the detained traditional ruler.
Benson also called on security agencies to stop the harassment and arrests of innocent Aluu natives and urged the outfits to carry out a thorough investigation of the gruesome murder of the students and bring the culprits to book.
He said: “It has come to our notice that some ethnic groups in the state whose sons were among those murdered on our soil are threatening to attack Aluu. We really sympathise with them for the loss of their children and reiterate that no Aluu man has a hand in their death.
“We implore them to allow security agencies to fish out the actual killers of their sons, but also warn strongly that we will no longer fold our arms and watch further destruction of our communities and the infliction of pains and injuries on the good and law-abiding people of Aluu clan.”

UNIPORT 4: Bring Culprits To Justice – ACN

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has strongly condemned the lynching of four students of the University of Port Harcourt by an obviously deranged mob, saying such a barbaric act ”debases our humanity and strips us all of our dignity”.

In a statement in Lagos, its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said all those involved in the horrendous and callous act should be fished out and brought to justice to serve as a deterrence.

It said that in a society governed by law, it is imperative that those who are deemed to have committed any offence whatsoever be allowed to have their day in court rather than be subjected to mob justice.

”This is what informs the saying that it is better that 10 guilty persons escape than one innocent suffer,” the party said.

It described as encouraging the statement credited to the Inspector-General of Police, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, that the police will investigate the killing and that such act is unacceptable in any democratic society where the sanctity of human life remains key.

ACN said all Nigerians should be concerned that the situation in the country has deteriorated to such a level that human beings could be so cruelly treated, so mercilessly beaten, so senselessly hacked and so callously doused in petrol and set ablaze, a treatment that should not even be meted out to animals.

”The implication of the incredible act of wickedness meted out to these young men is that many of our people are becoming numb to actions that should ordinarily jolt human sensibilities. This is what happens in an environment of uncontrolled violence as we have across our country now, where mass killings are becoming the norm.

”This is why the federal government, supported by all state governments and indeed all Nigerians, must wake up to its responsibility and strive to end the pervasive insecurity in our land,” the party said.
